My Hatteras Beauty

Good Morning and Happy Hump Day 😊

Yes…. I’m back!!!

So firstly, apologies for not posting for a few days.... I’ve been a little busy - We had our first women's retreat at the Atlantic Inn, with an absolutely fantastic group of ladies (although we did have to make some scheduling changes due to the storm). The time we did have together was awesome, and one of the most beautiful things that stood out for me, was how quickly the women bonded with each other – It was incredible how supportive they became of each other. I’d like to thank them all profusely, for making our time together so special. I won't be going into any specifics on the blog about our retreat, as we created a "safe, cozy space" for everyone to be able to be open and unafraid to speak their truth. So, as the saying goes....What happens at "My Atlantic Retreat", stay with the "Atlantic 😉"

And now it's back to my regular daily posts!

Yesterday, being on my beach for the sunrise was a little bittersweet......After the spectacular power my ocean showed us over the past few days - we have the calm after the storm.

Hatteras Calm after the Storm

Fueled by an extremely powerful "Nor’easter", my Hatteras beach, along with the rest of the Outer Banks and the east coast of North Carolina, were pounded relentlessly for several days. This coincided with some of the highest tides ever recorded, to truly create a perfect storm.

My Ocean flexing its muscles...

Unnamed, it crashed into my beautiful island, carving huge chunks of our sand dunes that would fall into the raging ocean, to be swept out to sea. What used to be a gentle slope onto the beach, is now an 8-10ft drop, the edges of the dunes stark with the roots of the protective seagrass showing for all to see the fragility of our environment.

Our beach landscape changes...

When mother nature decides to “strut her stuff”, we’re reminded to keep out of her way.

Here on my island home, I spent hours watching the enormous waves being blasted by the wind, crashing into the tumultuous ocean…. completely mesmerized by the sight. Reminding me that life events are so precious…and beautiful - but can also be raw and powerful…. just like my ocean.

We need to be agile, to be able to change our course or plans when the need arises….to realize that we are not always in control (which for a control freak like me took a long, long time to recognize), and that’s okay.

Nature always seems to find a way forward, even if this means reshaping her landscape - we too can find a way forward, we just have to learn to be more flexible and adaptable….and, the best part is.... that often this leads to a much more creative and beautiful outcome.

My View slightly changes....I love it just the same 🥰

How often does something come out of nowhere and knock us sideways? Something that just wasn't in your plan for the day....the week...or even the year?

Learning to work with what has been "handed" to you (or "thrown" at you in some instances), and making it the absolute best that it can be, gives the control back to you - It's in your power....just remember that like nature, sometimes we need to be resilient, flexible and adaptable.... and then, we too will always find a way forward (and it may be even more beautiful than you could ever have hoped for💗

Until next time,

Take care, stay safe and remember - when things don't appear to be going according to your plan, consider how you could adapt 😊

Hugs,

Pam

Personally, I appreciated the peaceful time indoors during the storm. I had so many things to catch up on, and usually Mother Nature competes for my time. I just relaxed and enjoyed the time inside, while being thankful for the fact that I didn't have any pressing needs to cause me to drive through salt ocean water on the road. I thought of our DOT workers, our EMS folks, and of course, you and your first retreat. Living here on Hatteras, adaptation is key.

I found myself thinking of you over the weekend and hoping the retreat went well despite the Atlantic making her presence very known. I believe we all have a plan that is already laid out for us, and it is up to us to follow that plan, which may differ than what we think we should be doing. Embrace change, embrace new things.
